Podcast: Plato's Circle

Plato’s Circle at UUCOV was established in the Spring of 2015 to compliment the popular ongoing Socrates Cafe monthly discussion series. The formats of the two groups are the same with one exception: In Plato’s Circle the topics for discussion are announced in advance, while in the Socrates Cafe group the topic is not announced until the actual meeting. Like Socrates, Plato’s is open to all in the community. It is currently held on the first Wednesday of the month , and is currently held all year around at one o’clock in the afternoon in the Asta Linder House at UUCOV.

The recordings presented here are for each session (some of them split into two slightly overlapping parts), with very little or no editing of content — chairs may be scraped as new people come in and phones may occasinally ring. Some “housekeeping” talk may be interjected. Global editing is performed to adjust the sound volumes between people and reduce hum and static. What you hear is the way it was. The “surround” effect of the stereo adds to the realism.

Change

We’ve all been through plenty of change during our lifetimes–personal, technological, and societal. But the pace of change has accelerated very sharply in recent years, and may now be exceeding our capacity to adapt in time. Thomas Friedman strongly suggests this in his latest (he says maybe his last) book — “Thank You for Being Late”. This book is essentially a survival guide for this new age. His solutions (more co-operation and collaboration, and more interaction at the local, grass roots level) have also been espoused by more conservative writers such as Charles Murray.
